Welcome to the Maine VISTA website!

This AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) project is part of collaborative initiative between Maine's Children's Cabinet, Communities for Children and Youth, and the Muskie School of Public Service, USM. The collaborative seeks to improve the lives of Maine's kids and seniors by supporting high quality anti-poverty initiatives.

Currently, we are seeking strong candidates interested in committing a year of their lives to serve Maine communities. For a complete list of VISTA service opportunities and position descriptions, click here.

Created in 1965 and modeled after the Peace Corps, VISTA is charged with building the capacity of communities to eradicate poverty. Since being incorporated into AmeriCorps in 1993, over 60,000 VISTAs across the country have helped organizations by:

  • raising resources;

  • managing volunteers;

  • organizing communities;

  • developing and assessing programs; and

  • promoting long-term solutions to poverty-related challenges.

In Maine, VISTAs are currently serving over 70 different non-profit organizations and government agencies, focused on a range of topics:

  • early child health

  • school readiness

  • youth development

  • juvenile justice diversion programs

  • senior health access

  • senior financial literacy

  • senior employment

  • civic engagement & leveraging community resources
